Getting better maybe

I know a sonnet hides within my grasp
With perfect iambs forming every foot
A flow that never gouges like a rasp
Or darkens mood like dousing it in soot

Each time I start to write in any form
I find my mind is looking to escape
If I want it to stick to any norm
I have to try to beat it into shape

Do other poets struggle in this way
Or does this sort of flow come to them straight
I sometimes think my mind just wants to play
And really it could serve this on a plate

One day I’m sure I’ll find the way I need
And write a sonnet very good indeed
