Why do we sing?

Do not look to a poet for wisdom
A poet just spins you his words
The answers you find in his kingdom
Are likely as not from the birds

The sounds of the words make for beauty
The meanings are second at best
Beauty is poetry’s duty
But sometimes we mean all the rest

The wren with his song every morning
Knows nothing of beauty or life
He is singing because day is dawning
And singing will bring him a wife

All ladies who read what I’m writing
Be sure that you think of the wren
If you find what I’m saying exciting
Remember I’m writing again…

Author notes

A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.
