A London morning bright and clear
The first week of this brand New Year
While Spring explodes in golden sun
The great tits fight for nuts and fun

The flowers fill the beds with fire
Narcissi trumpet their desire
Hyacinth and crocus too
Fill my heart with thoughts of you

The ancient way to mark the year
In Springtime not in Winter’s drear
Provides a start to lift the soul
A clearer shot at open goal

I cannot think a better way
To start anew on sweet spring day
So as the Robin puffs his chest
I’ll start my year, by nature blessed.

Author notes

Traditionally in England the New Year was counted from Lady Day (25th March) still marked by the financial year. By that reckoning today starts the first week of 2008, Happy New Year everyone.
