Different lives

I want to hold the child and keep her safe
But then I want the woman she became
Such contradictory emotions chafe
I cannot treat the two of them the same

The child has seen a world I cannot know
The woman’s in a place I want to be
There are so many ways I’ve still to grow
To handle everything I nearly see

There’s been so little drama in my life
I wonder if I’d cope the way you do
I feel my heart cut open with a knife
When I know all that life has done to you

It hurts that there is nothing I can say
To take your heart and wash the pain away
