You and whose army?

An army of one thousand souls arrayed upon a shelf
We march in serried ranks to face a foe
Each fighting for an unknown goal, unworried for himself
We only know we put on quite a show.
The dice are rolled and and soldiers die, at least they go away
We move another inch towards the end
We’ll battle on and not know why, it’s what we do each day
Just stand and fight beside each plastic friend
And later in a cardboard box we’ll travel back to base
No booty to be gained and little lost
We do not ask the reasons for we know that’s not our place
We only have to pay the daily cost
