Not sleeping

Sometimes sweet sleep seems far away from me
She drifted by and left me on my own
Where were you when I needed company
Who wants to fall asleep and dream alone?

The summer rain that drummed unceasingly
Has ceased to drum to make my thoughts a lie
But still I find my mind decreasingly
Inclined to let this yesterday slip by

A foolishness to sit and dream of sleeping
When sleep herself would bring me dreams of you
Too soon the shafts of dawn will start their creeping
And everything around will say it’s new

The sandman calls and takes my mind away
And finally there’s nothing more to say
