Her sonnets to the Moon

When Martha wrote her sonnets to the Moon
We knew each word was really meant for Jack
He’d marched off to a stirring martial tune
And promised her that he was coming back

She waited by the gate to catch the post
And grabbed a letter from the postman’s hand
Then for a while stood silently engrossed
In words that she could never understand

A telegram is not a lover’s note
And “Killed in action” not a sweet remark
Her “Thank-you Postie” died inside her throat
And early morning light turned into dark

She carried on a life, but now and then
A sonnet to the Moon flows from her pen
