Who are they?

Who are these people who, on our behalf
Remember those who can’t be there today?
The solemn columns at the Cenotaph
Are marking those whose chance has gone away.

The teenage boys of many years ago,
The sons and daughters of those soldier’s sons,
A mass of all of us who want to show
Respect for those who went to face the guns.

The Queen is there, and so’s a child of three.
In silence with her father in her eyes.
Each looks ahead and maybe they can see
Where some long unforgotten hero lies.

A single shot and silence everywhere
Two minutes for us all to be aware.

Author notes

Written after watching the two minutes silence and the laying of wreathes at the Cenotaph in London.
