The seagull

Hollow mists on silver oceans, lashing rain and summer storms,
Through a sky criss-crossed with lightning where a single gull performs.

All alone in stormy weather, hear your heartbeat in the rain;
When you wanted gentle sunshine all you found was empty pain.
Far from all that’s safe and solid, riding high on breaking waves,
In your mind the only constants are the words on lover’s graves.
All those years of aimless drifting, never thought to raise a sail,
All that kept you from succeeding was the thought that you might fail.

Hollow mists on silver oceans, lashing rain and summer storms,
Through a sky criss-crossed with lightning where a single gull performs.
