Trying to Work Hard

The gentle April sunlight falls like rain
Beneath a sky of fluffy children’s clouds
A blackbird pecks at something in the drain
And sparrows mob the breadcrumbs in their crowds

The words of happy poets are a breeze
That cleans away the winter from my mind
The flakes of pink and white that paint the trees
Are fragments of the dream I hope to find

Yet all the while my fingers tippytap
Unknotting files that need my tender care
And emails come and hit me with a slap
You can’t escape the office anywhere

Don’t work at home on pretty April days
If you’ve a heart that’s happy as it strays
