A Christmas Sonnet

At Christmas time when all is at its best
And children wait to see what Santa brings.
As workers hope to get some time for rest
And lovers think of life and wedding rings.

Now nature sleeps before her spring is sprung
Her precious jewels she hides beneath the soil
In churches ringers see their bells are rung
And sprouts are cooked so long they’re sure to spoil

As family groups begin to meet to talk
And eat too much and share the lives they lead
And after dinner they will have to walk
To try to lose the pounds that come with greed

And Christmas day is over ’til nest year
We hope we still can hold on to good cheer.
