A Parting

The single yellow rose beside the door
Reminded him of who she used to be
He wondered how he could have loved her more
And why he had agreed to set her free
She’d always been the focus of his dreams
The only girl he’d loved in fifty years
He’d carried her across life’s roughest streams
And stood beside her facing all her fears
And now she’d left and he was all alone
And feeling that his heart was torn away
The rest of life was only his on loan
A struggle to the end of every day
He watched her take the pills to end the pain
He’ll never have to watch her cry again
