He sits inside the cafe drinking tea
For twenty years no-one has used his name
His eyes are blank he know’s the world’s to blame
And all he wants is life to set him free

Throughout his married life he played the game
And Winnie was the apple of his eye
He thinks of her and feels no hint of shame
That every time he does he starts to cry

The cafe owners says “I think he’s Joe”
Perhaps I ought to let this one slip by
A voice inside me says “you have to try”
The worst thing he can do is just say “No”

“Excuse me Joe, is this an empty chair?”
“My cake’s too large, perhaps you’d like to share”

Author notes
The event is real, I no longer use the same cafe, so I do not know if he is
still there and still sad. His name isn’t Joe.
