A Rhymers Rant

A Rhymers Rant

It’s often considered a crime
When poets write rhyme all the time
But I love to read it
You could say I need it
The sound of good rhyme is sublime

It’s not that I don’t like free versing
A skill that I’m often rehearsing
But when it’s done badly
You’ll soon find I’m madly
Discarding my efforts and cursing

It’s rhyme that floats round in my head
Ensuring the inner me’s fed
I rhyme while I’m sleeping
Or laughing or weeping
Perhaps I’ll still rhyme when I’m dead

When modernist writers poo-poo it
And tell us we ought to eschew it
We rhymers keep going
While happily crowing
We know it’s because they can’t do it!

Author notes
One day I’ll learn to write decent free verse I hope, but it won’t stop me
