A Single Seagull Soaring

When the wind blows soft on oceans she’s a song to fill the air
While a ripple on the tide-line makes a sound that’s not quite there
When a thousand gulls are calling they are drowned out by the sea
But a single seagull soaring is the sound of poetry

From the roaring of a tempest to an almost silent breeze
From the crash of white tipped breakers to a lap against the trees
From the swoosh of tide on sandbars on a gentle summer day
There’s a music of the ocean that can bear my soul away

When a storm throws rocks and boulders at the bottom of a cliff
Or a playful Zephyr canters through the rigging of a skiff
There are sounds the gods would sigh for in the music of the sea
But a single seagull soaring is the sound of poetry

From the noise a trillion shrimps make to the singing of a whale
From the laughter of the puffins as they fish before a gale
From the grumblings of sailors who all dream of ports and play
There’s a music of the ocean that can bear my soul away

When I’m walking past the traffic on a far too busy road
Watching drivers slowly stewing till they’re ready to explode
I won’t hear their engines moaning in my mind I’m by the sea
Where a single seagull soaring makes the sound of poetry
