He took Elizabeth to Italy
And learned of life from viewing ancient Rome
He wrote blank verse and rhyme but never free
While travelling abroad and loving home
He learnt his art from Shelley and John Donne
Dramatic monologue his special style
Twenty thousand lines of verse were spun
Those Roman murder plots take quite a while!
His was the first voice heard beyond the tomb
As Edison recorded “Aix to Ghent”
His darkest writing fills the air with gloom
But comedy was often what he meant
Though Tennyson outshone him through his life
There is no doubt who had the greater wife!
