All I have

All I have

When the sun comes up in Winter, over frost-kissed leafless trees,
I remember how you warmed me in the biting Northern breeze.
Though I missed you in the summer and through Autumn’s golden rain,
It’s when snow lies over gardens that I can’t endure the pain.

When the snowflakes dance before me and I hear Old Santa’s sleigh,
I can’t face the thought of Christmas now life’s stolen you away.

It was spring before you kissed me and the daffodils were there,
Bobbing pretty yellow curtseys as you tangled up my hair,
And I missed you when I saw them giving fields their golden glow;
But I can’t believe the burden now I miss you in the snow.

When the snowflakes dance before me and I hear Old Santa’s sleigh,
I can’t face the thought of Christmas now life’s stolen you away.

We had summers full of laughter, there were streams to cool our feet,
And we’d cuddled on a sandbank when you told me I was sweet.
All this Summer you weren’t near me and I cried a bit each night,
Yet the sunshine couldn’t hurt me like this heartless winter light.

When the snowflakes dance before me and I hear Old Santa’s sleigh,
I can’t face the thought of Christmas now life’s stolen you away.

I remember when you showed me all the best of Autumn’s fire,
And its reds and golds and ochres filled my laughter with desire.
All those trees that shed their beauty seemed to cry with me for you
But it’s now I see the snowscape that my agony is true.

As those snowflakes dance before me I can’t hear Old Santa’s sleigh,
There was snow all round last Christmas when my future went away.

You were hoarfrosts in the hedges, you were snowmen in the field,
You were ripples under pond-ice that the polar wind had sealed,
You were all of winter’s beauty, you made snow fall just for me,
So without you here this winter all I have is misery.
