An evening meal

The English summer offers many splendid things to eat
And strawberries and cherries are perhaps the greatest treat
First take a piece of shortbread made with Cornish clotted cream
With honey in the sugar to create a perfect dream
I’ll whip some cream with sugar make a layer on the top
Arrange the fruit above it till no space means I must stop
More cream another biscuit then it’s time to decorate
A scoop of home-made ice-cream and it’s going to be great
A glass of wine and sunshine and a seat beneath a tree
A friend to sit beside me and a book of poetry
No force a man’s encountered has the power to divert
Us from the golden sunset as we eat this sweet dessert
