April’s Promises

Now spring’s returned and blown away the grey
And coloured in the winter’s crudest sketch
The garden’s birds have found they’ve much to say
And many beaks of nesting sticks to fetch
A summer sun shines down from April’s sky
Illuminating multicoloured flowers
The robin’s song declares he isn’t shy
He puffs his chest and sings for endless hours
These days can’t last the rains will soon return
With dreary clouds and unexpected storms
We live in hope too self obsessed to learn
That year by year “the usual thing” performs
The weather gods maintain a harsh regime
The perfect English summer’s just a dream
