At the end of the day

A twenty minute walk to Stonebridge Park,
Past sleepers sitting motionless in cars.
Ten thousand headlights putting paid to dark
And wiping out our meagre mat of stars.

A fifteen minute ride to Wealdstone,
Suduko and a little poetry,
Beside me there’s a moaner on the phone,
Debating what he doesn’t want for tea.

Eight pints of milk, two packs of hot cross buns
Then off for home and better, darker skies.
My next-door neighbour rounding up her sons,
Then gingerbread and tea to still my sighs.

Whatever else I find to do today
Is all for me and not just earning pay!
