Being Me

Being Me

I’d rather be last amongst winners
Than best of a poor second best
You can’t learn by beating beginners
Then beating an undersized chest
I’d rather be lost in the mountains
Than king of a small range of hills
Go running through courtyards of fountains
Than wait while a paddling pool fills

You can’t judge a book by the cover
It’s all that’s inside it that counts
The same rules apply to a lover
Love can’t be assessed by amounts
For friends I would walk through hot embers
But not lose a mate for a friend
A friend is a mate who remembers
You have to be you to the end

I don’t care who thinks I’m amazing
Though praises are sweet to receive
I’m not after flattering phrasing
But knowing the truths you believe
So if I declare that I love you
Don’t think that I’m lashed to your wheel
I won’t put another above you
But will think how others will feel

Author notes
I’m not really happy with this, not sure what’s wrong yet …
