Believing

I don’t believe in heaven and a perfect afterlife,
I don’t believe that death will bring eternities of strife,
I don’t think unseen deities are judging all we do,
But I believe in here and now, and I believe in you.
I don’t believe in God above, the Devil down below,
Or tatty men with megaphones who tell you that they know.
Ten thousand false religions fill with fools who make a fuss,
But I believe I’m here today, and I believe in us.
I don’t wrap all my hopes inside a prayer to who-knows-what,
Or offer everyone I meet a slice of what is not,
But I’ll believe in happiness, in spirits soaring free,
A promise of a better life – if you believe in me.
