Beneath the madness of the Moon

I remember I first saw her through a storm of shooting stars
That were charging through the heavens like magnificent hussars
But I didn’t see their beauty, couldn’t tell you how they blazed;
When she flashed her eyes towards me all of nature was erased.
Though the days that I was with her always ended far too soon,
I am happy that we loved beneath the madness of the Moon.

Summer days we walked on hillsides, picking daisies by the stream,
Making chains of love to bind us in a never ending dream.
Spent the evenings rowing gently, getting nowhere on the lake,
Till we landed on the island where I chained her to the stake.
In a prison made of fancy summer nights were done too soon,
I am happy that we loved beneath the madness of the Moon.

On a golden Autumn evening, we had kissed for many hours,
And I’d covered her with petals plucked from Summer’s final flowers.
There were melodies within me she had shown me how to sing
And I knelt before her shyly, with a flashing diamond ring.
In her eyes I saw her loving, though she called me her buffoon,
I am happy that we loved beneath the madness of the Moon.

We were married after Christmas, in the January snow,
And the stars that introduced us celebrated with a show.
All our honeymoon was frozen, so we spent a week indoors
And the noises from the bedroom weren’t the customary snores.
We played chase in fits of giggles like a monkey or baboon,
I am happy that we loved beneath the madness of the Moon.

Over years we raised our children to appreciate the night,
Darkness showed them all it’s wonder, didn’t fill their minds with fright.
Never mind if it was starry or a crashing thunderstorm
We were happy as we cuddled and we kept each other warm.
She would smile her silver crescent, when she thought it opportune,
I am happy that we loved beneath the madness of the Moon.

Now I still sit here beside her, we can never be apart,
Through the few years’ I’ve remaining she will nestle in my heart.
I am happy by this river where her ashes came to rest,
In this world of lovely ladies I was married to the best.
Though I’m ready for the ending it will be here far too soon
But I’m happy that we loved beneath the madness of the Moon
