Bucking the Trend

It seems to be a universal truth,
That bastards win the game and get the girl.
The world revolves around the most uncouth
A bigger bonus for the basest churl.
The nicer guy may have the greater skill,
The more polite may know the shorter cut
But cheating oafs will finish winning still;
The doors of life for us are firmly shut.
No good deed goes unpunished, so they say,
But nuts to that, I rather like me nice.
I know that there’s a proper way to play
I’m happy choosing virtue over vice.
And I still win the prize, once in a while,
Each little victory is worth a smile.
