Can you have your fill of filberts

Can you have your fill of filberts
Will fresh apples ever fail
Would you say “I love it still but
I prefer my produce stale”

When the leaves are bronzing slowly
Gentle breezes brush through trees
When the evenings start to shorten
And the mists arrive to tease
There are fruits to tempt your taste buds
Golden hues to please your eye
All the wonder that is Autumn
Makes the waiting poet sigh

Can you have you fill of filberts
Will your taste for pears decline
Would you say “I love it still but
Give me vinegar not wine”

After days of lazy lying
Under clear unbroken blue
Now the dawn is clearly trying
To arrive above the dew
In the orchard children scrumping
Run away from owner’s rage
But my heart has started thumping
For the beauty of this age

Can you have your fill of filberts
Or too many plums for pie
Would you say “I love it still but
For frozen food I’d die”

In the promise of the springtime
All this richness was ahead
Now the year’s begun to ring time
In the winter all is dead
But it’s autumn and there’s beauty
In the world that’s spread around
In this season fresh and fruity
There’s perfection to be found

Can you have your fill of filberts
Or too much of fresh and new
Would you say “I love it still but
Days of frost are overdue”
