Changing the guard

A sparrow sings to bid the day goodbye
As sunlight cedes the heavens to the Moon
Alone amidst a cloud-flecked dark’ning sky
Her courtiers will flock to join her soon
The blossom on some trees appears to shine
While skeletons beside them start to hide
The kitchen clock announces it is nine
The neighbourhood is settling inside
And what of you my lover of the night
Will you awake to chart each distant star
And send me notes of bubbling delight
With every detail garnered from afar
Most people need to feel the light of day
Astronomers need darkness for their play
