Chilly evenings

On chilly evenings after sunny days
When swifts and swallows sweep on flies to eat
We stare amazed at aerial displays
By birds whose mastery appears complete

The starling swarms make patterns in the sky
Such swirling shapes I find I cannot write
It’s nature’s way to bid the day goodbye
And welcome in the silver moonlit night

And you and I should cuddle from the chill
A glass or two will warm a lover’s heart
I know that I could never drink my fill
Of such an evening brew of unmade art

And as the light decays and stars arrive
Quite suddenly I’m glad that I’m alive

Author notes
It’s a sonnet, innit.
