Distant Skies Beneath Me

The stars all shine inside a mountain lake
A clear black stain in seas of green and grey
No breath of wind to set the lights at play
A winter spell that only dawn can break

It’s silent now the rills have lost their voice
A single fox skirts round the other side
But darkened voles can use the night to hide
And Reynard leaves to seek a wider choice

Alone for now, I gaze down at that sky
Uncounted stars weave patterns at my feet
Afraid to breathe I make a last retreat
But leave my thoughts where they can always fly

Far distant days still live inside my heart
And silent stars give dreams the chance to start
