Doing it my way

How many of you read your work aloud?
And if you do, do you hear every word?
I don’t mean standing up before a crowd,
Or acting out until you look absurd.
I read each line, each stanza, every time.
It isn’t good enough to cast my eye,
I have to test the meter and the rhyme
And stop the little errors slipping by.
For me that is the best of poetry,
When all the sounds fit seamlessly inside;
It’s only then the meaning crashes free,
And you will find your thoughts are not denied
For goodness sake don’t mumble, make it clear
If what you write is beautiful, they’ll hear!
