Some dismal days can dull the brightest mood
Make August sun seem cold as winter rain
Each tiny bite of intellectual food
Seems gathered from the bottom of a drain
You head for home with nothing much to show
Unsatisfied and deeply uninspired
Philosophers may feel “It helps you grow”
But sufferers just know it makes you tired.
Now sky-blue pinks and blackbird serenades
Are working hard to lift my heavy gloom
But shadows bloom as summer twilight fades
My jaded thoughts still linger round a tomb.
One last recourse to resurrect the dream
I’ve found a bowl of strawberries and cream …
Author notes
Well there’s raspberries too, and a greengage, and I’m adding some Häagen-Dazs
strawberry cheesecake ice-cream, all this after a pork-chop dinner, about 5
days worth of calories I expect but it was a seriously rotten day!
