False Prophet

Somebody said that I’m an expert rhymer,
And meter flowed like water through my verse;
But just because I’ve read a poets’ primer
It doesn’t mean my works aren’t getting worse.

I know the words folk use to talk of meter,
I’ve read a lot of prosody and such,
But in my heart I know that I’m a cheater,
Who leans on form and artifice too much.

Before you give an expert too much honour
Consider how the term can be derived —
An “ex” may mean a has-been or a gonner
A spurt’s a pressured drip that never thrived

So yes, it’s true I do know how to rhyme
But listening to me may be a crime!
