Fears and expectation

She waited on the quay to see him land
When war was done and he was hers again
They’d marry and they’d live the life they planned
Now all the world could see an end to pain

She thought of love and roses round the door
Of pets and dogs and friends for Sunday tea
A pretty house with carpets on the floor
Where every hero and his wife should be

Aboard the ship his thoughts are filled with fear
What will she think when she can see his face
What chance that she will stay when it is clear
That nothing like he dreamed can be his place

What chance of happiness and normal life?
Will dreadful burns now rob him of a wife?
