Gone Nutty!

No other nut will ever match the filbert!
Though others try the filbert can’t be beat,
Perhaps too many cobs would make me ill but
I’ll take that risk for this my annual treat.
The hazelnut, its cousin, can be tasty
But it’s the kind of nut that’s always seen.
If you want something special best be hasty,
A filbert should be eaten fresh and green.
True East-Enders, and men from England’s garden
Have eaten cobnuts since the dawn of time,
Though Turks and others may well ask for pardon,
To toast a filbert has to be a crime!
In English Autumn one nut does the job,
Please raise your glass to praise the Kentish Cob!
Author notes
Filberts, or Kentish Cobs are traditionally eaten fresh from the tree unlike
other nuts. They are hard to find even here but well worth the search there is
no taste quite like them.
