Haunting Words

Haunting Words

A whisper of the words I long to hear
Still taints the dreams that keep me from my sleep;
Despite the herds of narcoleptic sheep
I try to count when midnight’s almost here.

Those unheard words re-echo through my mind,
Reminding me of long forgotten days
That must emerge from slowly clearing haze
As I recall the life I left behind.

But you’re not here, your words remain unsaid,
The you I see’s a trick of fading light,
The private ghost that shepherds me each night,
Entirely real though trapped inside my head.

And when I’ve died the words will still remain,
Eternal shades of self inflicted pain.
