His Second Love

His Second Love

She stood on the beach and she waited,
The sun sinking slow in the West.
The smile in her soul had deflated,
Her lover too far from the nest.

They met in a Summer of dancing,
Of songs that flowed into your heart
She flicked up her skirts to his glancing
And soon they were barely apart.

The bite in the breeze speaks of sadness,
The tang of the salt meets her tears.
To wander alone leads to madness
And she’s walked alone here for years.

The ring that he gave her was slender
And carried three tiny blue stones.
His kisses were eager but tender
And started a fire in her bones.

She seems not to notice the weather,
No gale blows her feet from the path.
Her love the unbreakable tether
That’s tied to the storm’s aftermath.

   The wedding arrived, she stood happy;
The man that she loved by her side.
He stayed while she changed every nappy
As mother emerged from the bride.

You see in her eyes she remembers
The days that she laughed every day
But now summer months are Decembers,
The rest of each year fades away.

Their baby was just three years older,
The first time he worked on the boat.
New passions now burned slightly colder
His first love reclaiming his vote.

The light in her eyes ever staler,
No sunlight can rewarm the heart
Of a woman who’s man is a sailor
When she and her love are apart.

But he was at home between sailings,
When love filled her daydreams with fun
And twice he came home to unvelings,
Of one brand new daughter and son.

She turns after midnight and slowly
Walks back from the edge of the shore.
The hope that she holds never wholly
Discarded like dirt on the floor.

   His voyages grew ever longer,
The nights in her arms were so few.
The call of the sea seemed far stronger
   Than anything she ever knew.

Her love never turned into hating
But nothing could set her heart free
The ghost of his widow’s still waiting
For him to come home from the sea
