Insignificance

We like to think that we are in control
That nature is a pet we choose to keep
But days arrive when we must pay the toll
We didn’t sow the whirlwind we must reap

There were no clues before the awful quake
And little time before that dreadful wave
What can you do when buildings start to shake
Too many lives will not be yours to save

The Earth will never be a toy we own
Our greatest deeds are pinpricks on its skin
You cannot ask forgiveness from a stone
No vengeance drives the rumblings within

Though every life is precious in our eyes
The universe will never hear our sighs
