Just one of the sights

Alone
on the bench outside the Baptist church
he sits
fighting his demons
and talking to his gods.
He used to sit with friends
drinking supermarket cider
reliving Navy days
One by one
the numbers dwindled
but he remains.
The cider now replaced
by coffee from the ladies in the charity shop
who gave him the shoes he wears
and the coat he refused
A cheery greeting when he recognises you
helpful and polite when he is able
always there
weather permitting
just one of the sights of our town.
