Looking in from outside

I love to sit and watch the passing world,
To know that I am not the only one.
Yet I prefer to stay here warmly curled
Pretending adult life has not begun.
I see the shapes of other people’s lives
And understand that they may be like me;
Content to know that some may need their wives
But in themselves content to simply be.
I want to know that there is space enough
For solitude away from all the rest.
Humanity is easy to rebuff
When you have seen its answers to the test.
Although I’m still in love with humankind
I’d just as soon live deep inside my mind
Author notes
People – D.H Lawrence
‘I like people quite well
at a little distance.
I like to see them passing and passing
and going their own way,
especially if their aloneness is alive in them.
Yet I don’t want them to come near.
If they will only leave me alone
I can still have the illusion that there is room enough in the world.’
