Losing

I’ve tried to walk one thousand miles
In just one pair of shoes
I’ve kicked the world and borne its wiles
And still had breath to choose
I’ve turned my head away from smiles
Before the smilers lose
There isn’t any way to win the game
I’ve climbed the hill on hands and knees
Without the strength to stand
I’ve found the will to answer pleas
Made with an outstretched hand
And tried to fight against the squeeze
That other men have planned
There isn’t anyone to take the blame
I’ve held the shield above my head
To fend off many blows
I’ve tried to make bright gold from lead
And flames from dying glows
But all I’ve done is stand instead
Of anyone who knows
And now its time to hang my head in shame
