I caught my love of poetry from Mac
He read each verse as though it were alive
It took me years but now I’d like him back
To see the sort of work that I contrive

I saw him throw a school chair through a door
To emphasise a last dramatic phrase
No teacher ever taught a student more
But he and schools were slipping out of phase

His other love was putting on the shows
That lifted literature straight off the page
It’s through his influence some pupils chose
To make careers as actors on the stage

He couldn’t cope with modern teaching’s rules
Too many of his ilk are lost to schools

Author notes
Actually I don’t think Mr McAuliffe was my best teacher, but he was very close
and he was the man who gave me poetry, although reading and not writing, I
didn’t start writing until well after he was dead.
