Made for Lazing

Summer days are rolling by me,
Washed by streams from mountain tarns,
Far from all the woes that try me —
Silly people spinning yarns.
Gentle clouds are tossed by breezes,
Painting shapes across the sky,
A dragonfly that flits and teases
Electric blue to catch the eye.

Kendal Mint Cake if I’m starving,
Climbing boots — not on my feet,
Hidden tracks the years spent carving
Led me here away from heat.
Through the dappling, waving willow
Buzzards wheel on rising air,
Rucksack as a makeshift pillow,
Half asleep without a care.

I can’t hear the sounds of laughter
Drifting from the park below,
Don’t care where they’re “going after”
“Back to town” to “see the show”.
Summer days were made for lazing,
Walking off to nowhere much,
Lost where sheep are gently grazing
Hoping life stays out of touch!

Author notes
“On the idle hill of summer…”
by A. E. Housman

On the idle hill of summer,
Sleepy with the flow of streams,
Far I hear the steady drummer
Drumming like a noise in dreams.
