Meter Mad!

Good poetry is not concerned with counting
To get it right you listen to the sounds
Then pretty soon you’ll find the praises mounting
Your readership will grow by leaps and bounds
The syllables should never be your ruler
It’s meter makes the most enticing reads
Then formal verse becomes a whole lot cooler
And that is what this cranky planet needs
Some folk may say the content’s all that matters
Well content’s king, but what’s a king alone?
With spiky lines our concentration shatters
And you will find your readership has flown
Technique in verse is always out of fashion
But get it wrong and no-one reads your passion
