The evening star shone clear tonight
As sunset set the woods on fire
The geese all gabbled in delight
And I recalled my heart’s desire
The wind was chill around the lake
But dreams can keep the spirits higher
I knew that I made no mistake
And I recalled my heart’s desire
The night fell soft on Mad Bess Wood
So ghostly shadows could conspire
The magpies gathered as they should
And I recalled my heart’s desire
