Nightmares

The thunderclap, the silence and the scream
Were all I heard and then there was no more
Were all these sounds just echoes in a dream
Or should I look for trouble at the door
A scratching sound, too soft for me to hear
A whimper that I’m sure contains my name
A feeling that my fate is drawing near
Are these things real or just a dreadful game
When you had left I thought you’d be back soon
But now I haven’t seen you for a year
And every month beneath that angry moon
I find my soul is eaten up by fear
The morning news now crackles into life
They’ve found the mangled body of my wife
