North of the Border

From the soft green border country to the hard grey mountain tops
Herds of black and red horned cattle odd shaped fields of soft food crops
Have you eaten Arbroath smokies with a whisky on the side
Or watched whale sharks off the West coast on an idle summer tide

In the dreary granite cities there are faces hard as stone
Hiding hearts as warm as heather (where the haggises are grown)
There are Engineers in Glasgow there’s an Edinburgh fringe
If you talk about goalkeepers you can feel the nation cringe

I’ve been skiing there in summer I’ve sat worshipping the sun
There are rocks that haven’t changed there since the sparks of life begun
You can’t sum up all of Scotland in a poem or a book
If you want to know the country you will have to go and look!
