Our Independence Day

It’s independence day for every Brit!
To celebrate the time we lost the chains
Occasioned by colonial growing pains
Which no-one found the wisdom to remit.
Though other colonies walked different ways
The US was the first to cast adrift
Beginnings of a great strategic shift
That rumbled slowly into modern days
Brave German troops fought hard to stem the tide
Of freedom fighting terrorists back then,
But now we smile and idolise these men
Who thought that laws were there to be denied.
It’s funny how a Nation changes views
Depending if it’s history or news …
