Part of me

Part of me

You are not my priceless treasure
Not a barrow-load of gold
But you’re there in every pleasure
Every happiness I hold
And I do not want to shout you
From the tops of every tree
But I know I’ll never doubt you
For you are a part of me

There are those who see perfection
In the footsteps of their love
But you’re in my own reflection
When the Moon is high above
Though your voice is not a larksong
It is all I ever hear
You’re my own “day in the park” song
That is played inside my ear

I can’t tell you why we’re lovers
Give the reasons that I feel
We must stay beneath the covers
Knowing nothing else is real
I don’t need to claim possession
Do not need to ask for leave
There will be no indiscretion
As our egos interweave

You aren’t diamonds and coral
You aren’t sapphires in a ring
We will never have a quarrel
We are part of everything
There’s no distance in between us
Cannot think of you and I
Every me or thee must mean us
We are one until we die

Author notes
Inspired by this poem by Pablo Neruda, I don’t think it has a title as such …

“I do not love you as if you were salt-rose or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms,
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers.
Thanks to your love a certain fragrance,
risen darkly from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride,
so I love you because I know no other way than this:
where “I” does not exist, nor “you,”
So close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
So close that your eyes close and I fall asleep.”

~Pablo Neruda
