Preantepenultimate

November the Seventh, the rumble of guns,
The chatter of bullets addressing the Huns
There’s Jimmy’s boy Peter stretched out on the wire
And David and Patrick, both lost under fire.
The tanks are amongst us men crushed under tracks
A trench full of bodies half covered with sacks
Two hundred surrendered, but far more have died
And German or British their mothers still cried
They say it’ll end soon a stalemate no more
Preantepenultimate day of the war.
