We find all actions must entail
A little probability.
It’s roulette on the quantum scale;
A game of chance for you and me.
For everything is made of string,
      That vibrates most harmonic’ly.
      These trillion trillion voices bring
A game of chance for you and me.
Electrons, quarks and all the rest
Are born of some strange energy.
The universe seems to suggest
A game of chance for you and me.
We find all actions must entail
A game of chance for you and me.

The forces that we thought we knew
All seem to have been born as one.
A tiny blob of quantum glue
Sprung into life as time begun.
      Inflating at the highest rate,
As all the particles were spun.
      It cooled into another state,
Sprung into life as time begun.
Now gravity and strong and weak
And electromagnetic fun
Condensed from that undreamed of peak,
Sprung into life as time begun.
The forces that we thought we knew
Sprung into life as time begun.

Just fourteen billion years ago
The temperature began to fall.
I wonder if we’ll ever know
What caused the bang that built us all.
Now just a cloud of microwaves
Is left of that first bugle call.
What writes our music on the staves?
What caused the bang that built us all?
Perhaps a wobble in a brane
Created this enormous ball.
Will this beginning come again?
What caused the bang that built us all?
      Just fourteen billion years ago
What caused the bang that built us all.
