Ranting Again

What’s the matter with writing in meter
Or rhyming that actually rhymes
When poetry always sounds sweeter
If you are adept at those “crimes”
I know that it’s not always needed
And free verse can be simply great
But when these old fashions are heeded
Then writing achieves a new state
My meter’s too even they’ve told me
I need to include rhymes that don’t
But I do not mind that they scold me
I’ve told all these fools that I won’t
Pluperfect’s the target for me
Any less and it’s not poetry!
